Morehead City Marlins News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (5-3 second half, 21-14 overall) scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to erase a four-run deficit and defeat the Morehead City Marlins (2-8 second half, 12-25 overall) on a walk-off single by Lloyd Enzor in the bottom of the ninth inning, 7-6, Thursday evening at Buck Hardee Field.
In the final frame, the first four batters reached and scored for the Sharks via two singles, a double and an error. After a fielder's choice, Cole McInturff laced a double down the left field line, tying the game at 6-6. Then after a strikeout Enzor lined a single to right field, scoring McInturff for the winning run.
In the sixth frame the Marlins erupted for four runs, breaking a 2-2 tie. Chace Mitchell led off with a walk and Corey Bass followed with a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Bass advanced both runners, Geoff DeGroot singled to shallow right field to score Mitchell as Bass advanced to third and DeGroot went to second base on an errant throw. After a ground out, Sam Ott doubled to center to score two and Sal Annunziata doubled to left to score Ott and propel the Fish to a 6-2 lead.
Wilmington opened the scoring in the first frame when Casey Goss opened with a walk and advanced to second base on a single by Aaron Preston. After a fielder's choice nailed Preston at second and advanced Goss to third, Zach Stephens laced a single to left field, scoring Goss and putting Wilmington up 1-0.
Morehead City took the lead in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally. With two down, Ott doubled to center field. Then, ball four was issued to Annunziata and on the wild pitch Ott advanced to third then came around to score on a throwing error from the catcher. The next batter Matt Anderson then lined a single to left field scoring Annunziata from second base and giving the Fish a 2-1 lead.
Wilmington tied up the ball game in the third inning when Goss led off with a single and bounced from first to third on a pair or wild pitches. After Preston walked, Enzor hit in to a double play, scoring Goss and tying the game 2-2.
Aaron Hoover (3-2) earned the win in four innings out of the bullpen while William Prince (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings of work. Tyler Maxwell started for the Marlins and picked up the no decision with five innings of work, allowing just two runs on three hits in his second start of the summer. Nick Price also ended with a no decision, allowing four runs in five innings of work.
The Marlins return home tomorrow evening when they host the West Divison first half champion Forest City Owls. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
