Sharks Come up Short in Extras Agianst Marlins

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (16-10, 30-23) came up just short in a high scoring extra inning affair at home against the Morehead City Marlins (12-15, 24-31) on Saturday night. There were a combined 25 hits and 15 runs as the Marlins pulled out the victory in 10 innings 9-6.

The Marlins got off to a bang to start the game with three runs on four hits as Dylan Brown led off with a single. Cole Billingsley hit into a fielder's choice to retire Brown. Billingsley then stole second as the throw went into center field and as he moved up to third, but the throw to third got away and allowed him to score to make it 1-0 Marlins. The Marlins picked up two runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The Sharks answered in the bottom of the first inning on wild pitch to score Andrew Amaro and a single from Justin Weaver scored Cody Dolan to make it 3-2 in favor of the Marlins.

The Marlins had another big inning in the top of the third as Brad Haynal led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single from Jeff Kammer to make it 4-2. The Marlins picked up two more runs in the same in with back to back walks with the bases loaded to make it 6-2. The Sharks got a run back in the bottom half of third as Tyler Slaton grounded out to the right side but was able to drive in Dolan to make it 6-3.

Neither team could get a lot going through the next few innings after having an explosive start to the game. The Sharks broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning as Amaro picked up a one out double and then stole third to get into scoring position. Alex Freedman drew a walk to put runners on the corners. A bad throw from Zach Arnold behind the plate sailed into right field and allowed Amaro to score and Freedman to move up to third with one out. Dolan hit a ball through the right side to score a run and make it 6-5. Zach Stephens continued to hit the ball well as he hit his second double of the game to score Dolan and tie up the game 6-6.

Dolan led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, but was unable to score as the game went into extras. The Marlins broke the tie in the 10th with three runs on three hits to take the lead 9-6 and hold on for the win.

Andrew Amaro went 3-4 with a double and two runs scored and Dolan went 4-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for the Sharks. Dalton Britt went 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Marlins.

The Wilmington Sharks will end the regular season on the road on Monday night against the Morehead City Marlins with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
