SwampDogs Secure Playoff Berth
August 3, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
The SwampDogs are playoff bound after shutting out the Florence RedWolves 6-0 to close out the 2013 home regular season thanks to a career night at the plate from center fielder Brian Celsi (California).
After winning, the SwampDogs mathematically eliminated the Wilson Tobs from post-season contention and the four teams are set in the East.
Fayetteville wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning. John Rooney (Siena) drew a leadoff walk against Brandon Cook (Broward) and Mitchell Kranson (California) would single to right field to put the first two runners on base.
After Ransom LaLonde (St. Edward's) successfully hit a sacrifice bunt, Celsi would drive in the first two runs of the game on a double that was roped down the left field line.
In the second inning, Ryan Nagle (Illinois) reached base with a leadoff walk and he stole second base. Adam Walton (Illinois) placed a sacrifice bunt down the first base line and Rooney would drive in the third run in two innings.
Celsi collected his second hit of the night to plate Rooney in the fifth inning. Right after the seventh inning stretch, Celsi would add to his unbelievable night at the dish.
With no outs and the bases loaded, Celsi drove a two-strike pitch up the chute to score Rooney and Kranson, making the lead 6-0.
Mark Biesma (Washburn) had a great six-inning start, allowing no runs and just five hits in route to his second win in his three starts. Wright State teammates Jack Van Horn and Travis Hissong combined for three innings of relief, allowing no runs, two hits and two strikeouts.
Celsi finished the night 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a double. Rooney also was impressive as he went 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored, a stolen base, RBI and a double.
The SwampDogs wrap up the regular season on Monday night in Wilson, NC for a doubleheader against the Tobs. The two seven-inning games have playoff seeding implications because heading into Sunday, the SwampDogs will be a half game ahead of the Sharks for the three seed.
The one thing set in stone is that the SwampDogs will host game one of the playoffs on August 7th. They will either play the Peninsula Pilots or the Edenton Steamers.
