Sharks Cannot Overcome Another Slow Start

Morehead City, North Carolina-The Wilmington Sharks fell into an early deficit against the Morehead City Marlins Thursday night at Big Rock Stadium in an 8-3 loss. The loss dropped the Sharks to 4-8 on the season.

Sharks starter Alex Havlicek ran into early trouble when the Marlins put runners on second and third with nobody out in the first. A pair of RBI groundouts scored both runners putting the Marlins up 2- 0. Havlicek got out of the inning and then retired the first two he faced in the second. He then gave up a single followed by three straight walks to make it 3-0. Troy Britts came on in relief and walked in another run before getting out of the inning.

Marlins starter Tyler Blomster kept the kept the Sharks offense in check. He gave up just three runs off four hits in six innings and recorded a total of thirteen strikeouts. He struck out the first five Sharks hitters he faced as well as a total of six in the first two innings.

The Sharks staged a mini rally in the third when Tilo Skole drew a one out walk. Steven Curry and Jacob Plastiak followed with back-to-back singles. Plastiak's single scored Skole, advanced Curry to third, and extended his streak of having reached base safely in all twelve Sharks games so far this season. Plastiak then stole second. Curry took off from third on the throwdown and scored to cut it to 4-2.

Trailing 7-2 in the sixth, Cory Everett hit a solo home run to lead off the inning cutting it to 7-3. The Sharks would not get any closer.

The Sharks will be back in action Friday night against the Holly Springs Salamanders at Buck Hardee Field. It is Superhero night presented by Children's Museum of Wilmington. It will feature a post- game-fireworks show presented by AARP. Garrett McDaniels (0-1, 4.50) will start on the mound for the Sharks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
