Sharks Bats Come out of Hibernation, Grizzlies Fall 5-2
July 27, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
Gastonia's Jordan Newsome retired the first 13 batters he faced before Alex Destino spoiled his perfect game bid with a single in the fifth inning. Shortly thereafter, the home team exploded for 5 runs on 5 hits to take the lead and never look back as the Wilmington Sharks (25-22) defeated the Gastonia Grizzlies (30-20) by a score of 5-2 on Monday night at the Shark Tank in Wilmington.
The crooked 7th inning for the Sharks was kickstarted by a leadoff double by Kyle Nowlin. Alex Destino's single through the middle was mishandled by Casey Scoggins allowing Nowlin to score Wilmington's first run of the night. Wilmington was far from done as Newsome was removed from the game, being replaced by Brandon Donahue.
Destino was knocked in by a Jae Roberts double, who scored the go-ahead run on Andy Austin's single into center. Still with no outs in the seventh, Gastonia went to the bullpen again to bring in Ethan Workoetter. Donahue shoulders the loss after facing 2 batters, allowing 2 runs and 2 hits
Hayes Nelson, Workoetter's first batter, drew a walk. Kennard McDowell plopped down a well placed bunt for a single as the throw sailed wide to score Austin. Hayes Nelson would eventually be driven home by Jose Hernandez's sacrifice fly to center field.
John Parke (4-2) picked up the victory after tossing 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Parke was relieved by Joe Bialkowski in the eighth and Evan Brabrand in the ninth. Bialkowski faced 4 and struck out 2 while Brabrand picked up his 2nd save by shutting the door to seal the victory.
As the Sharks continue to fight for favorable position in the playoffs, they'll head north to Morehead City to face the Marlins Tuesday before returning home for 4 games in 3 days. Wednesday's double-header against Petersburg is followed by Thirsty Thursday's matchup with Holly Springs before hosting Morehead City for the final home game of the 2015 regular season on Friday.
