Sharks Add Rookie Defensive Lineman Donnie Owens

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that defensive lineman Donnie Owens has been assigned to the Jacksonville roster. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 24-year-old Owens (6'3", 315) attended Coastal Carolina University, where he redshirted his freshman season and later transferred to Winston-Salem State. Owens in 2012 was named Second-Team All CIAA combining for 62 tackles, 10.5 tackles for a loss, seven sacks and one fumble recovery. In 2013 Owens became a marquee player for the Rams leading the team with 10 sacks his senior year. During his last season with Winston- Salem State, Owens recorded eight tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble against UNC Pembroke. Owens finished his senior season averaging 4.3 tackles per game, with 51 total tackles for the season, ranking in the top 100 CIAA Football players in 2013.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Owens was a four-year starter at Douglas Byrd High School. During his high school career Owens earned First-Team All-Cape Fear Region Honors and First-Team All-Mid Southeastern Conference honors. In 2009 Owens graduated, leaving Douglas Byrd with 126 career tackles, 36 tackles for a loss, and nine sacks having led Douglas Byrd to a Class 4-A State Championship.
