Severe Weather Ends Spirit's Clash against the Red Stars Before the Final Whistle

CHICAGO, Ill. (June 20, 2015) - After a short World Cup break, the Washington Spirit (4-2-2, 14 points) faced off against the Chicago Red Stars (4-1-3, 15 points) last night in Chicago. However, severe weather caused two significant delays during the match before the game was called off in the 38th minute.

The Red Stars controlled the majority of play during the beginning of the game, but that pressure resulted in a myriad of off target chances. The Spirit finally found their own rhythm when a midfield giveaway from Chicago was picked off by forward Amanda Da Costa. Da Costa charged toward the 18 yard box before passing centrally to fellow forward Crystal Dunn whose shot went just a few feet wide of the post.

The game went into its first weather delay in the 18th minute. Both teams and the fans waited out the weather for three and a half hours before finally returning to the pitch in hopes of resuming the match.

Returning to play around midnight local time, the Spirit and Red Stars came out determined to finish the game strongly. The first opportunity came from rookie forward Sofia Huerta as she made the most of a scramble inside the Spirit penalty area and knocked the ball beyond Spirit goalkeeper Kelsey Wys. However, the referee deemed Huerta offside and the scoreline remained level at 0-0.

Just minutes later Spirit defender Megan Oyster's beautiful one touch shot off a corner kick sailed into the net to give the Spirit the lead in the 38th minute. Just moments later, the game was called off for the night. The score will not stand and the full match will be re-played at a date to be determined.

The Washington Spirit return home next Saturday to play the Houston Dash on June 27th at 7:00 PM at Maureen Hendricks Field.
