
Seven Former Navigators Selected in 2011 MLB Draft

LYNN, MA (June 9, 2011) - Seven former North Shore Navigators were chosen in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, increasing the overall total to 21 times a player from the organization has been drafted since the team moved to Lynn in 2008. This year's draft class included:
LHP Sean Gilmartin, Jr., Florida State
Atlanta Braves, Round 1 - 28th overall
C Mike Dowd, Jr., Franklin Pierce
Seattle Mariners, Round 12 - 363rd overall
P/IF/C Garret Smith, Sr., Boston College
Tampa Bay Rays, Round 20 - 630th overall
C Derek Trent, Sr., East Tennessee State
Pittsburgh Pirates, Round 31 - 932nd overall
SS Chad Zurcher, Sr., Memphis
New York Mets, Round 31 - 942nd overall
1B Ben Waldrip, Jr., Jacksonville State
Kansas City Royals, Round 40 - 1206th overall
OF Matt Marquis, Jr., Maryland Boston Red Sox, Round 41 - 1252nd overall
Gilmartin became the highest player drafted in team history when he was selected 28th overall by Atlanta. The left-hander has a 12-1 record with a 1.83 ERA this season for the Seminoles, who are set to begin play in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend. He has 122 strikeouts in 113.1 innings this spring and was a member of the 2009 Navigators. Gilmartin was also drafted out of school three years ago.
Dowd hit .340 with three home runs and 37 RBI this spring for the Ravens. The junior catcher appeared in 30 games for the Navigators in 2009.
Smith, a two-way senior, hit .267 in 47 games with 17 doubles and 17 RBI for the Eagles. He also had a 2.87 ERA with six saves this spring on the mound. Smith was a member of both the 2009 and 2010 Navigator squads and had the game-winning double in Game 3 of the NECBL Finals last August.
Trent was a member of the Navigators in 2008. The senior had a monster year at East Tennessee State, hitting .357 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI this spring.
Zurcher currently has a .443 average and .557 on-base percentage with Memphis, as the senior leads the entire nation in both categories. The senior shortstop also has 47 runs scored, 34 RBI, and 12 stolen bases on the season. Zurcher was a member of the 2008 North Shore team.
Waldrip, a Medford native, was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 42nd round last year before being selected in Round 40 by Kansas City on Wednesday. At Jacksonville State, the 6-6 first baseman hit .344 with 10 home runs and 45 RBI for the Gamecocks.
Marquis appeared in 15 games at Maryland this year after transferring from Vanderbilt. He had two home runs and 18 RBI with the Navs in 2009.
