Seven Former Kernels Invited to 2016 Twins Spring Training as Non-Roster Players

Cedar Rapids, IA - Seven former Cedar Rapids Kernels players were among 22 non-roster players invited by the Minnesota Twins to 2016 Major League Spring Training in Fort Myers, FL.

They are pitchers Jose Berrios (2013), Nick Burdi (2014), Jake Reed and Buddy Boshers (2009 & 2010); infielder Engelb Vielma (2014); and catchers Mitch Garver (2014) and Alex Swim (2014).

Additionally, former Cedar Rapids Xavier prep Ryan Sweeney was signed by the Twins to a minor league contract and an invite to Major League Spring Training. Sweeney has played nine MLB season, most recently with the Chicago Cubs in 2014.

A total of 62 players are scheduled to be in Spring Training (40 roster players plus 22 non-roster invitees). Twins pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Sunday, February 21st, with their first workout slated for Monday, February 22nd. The balance of the squad is scheduled to report on Friday, February 26th, with full-squad workouts beginning on Saturday, February 27th.

Berrios will be part of the Twins Hot Stove Roundtable Discussion as part of the 20th Annual Hot Stove Banquet on Wednesday, January 27th. Kernels 2016 Field Manager Jake Mauer and Twins Director of Player Development Brad Steil are also scheduled to be at the banquet and take part in the Roundtable Discussion. The Kernels open the 2016 Midwest League season at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday, April 7th against the Quad Cities River Bandits. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
