Hamilton, ON - Dan Lomas scored a hat trick and Steven Orleman finished with 45 saves but the New York Riptide (2-8) were defeated by the Toronto Rock (7-4) 12-9 at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, ON Saturday evening.
Lomas' three goal effort came in his season debut, after a sustaining a torn Achilles last Summer. Callum Crawford finished the game with six points on a goal and five assists, and now needs just three assists to become the eighth player in NLL history to reach 700 in his career. Jeff Teat finished the game with five points on a goal and four assists, and the Riptide finished the game with seven different goal scorers.
The first quarter was a defensive battle and despite New York being outshot 17-4 in the first frame, Orleman kept Toronto off the board. Lomas scored the game opening goal, which was the quarter's only goal.
Toronto scored five of the six goals in the second quarter, with the lone Riptide goal coming from Damon Edwards- who spent the last eight seasons with the Toronto Rock before signing with the Riptide as a free agent last Summer- and the Riptide trailed 5-2 at the end of the first half.
In the third quarter, the Rock scored the first three goals of the frame, before the scoring run was halted on a behind the back goal by Teat on a feed from Crawford to cut the lead to 8-3. Ryan Fournier followed it up with his first goal of the season to cut the lead to four. The teams traded goals with Larson Sundown scoring for the Riptide to make it a 9-5 game.
In the final frame, Toronto scored three of the first four goals to take a 12-6 lead, with Connor Kearnan scoring for the Riptide. New York scored the game's final three goals, as Lomas scored a pair to complete his hat trick, and Crawford added one.
The Riptide will head back out on the road next weekend to take on the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday, March 12 at 5:00 p.m. at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY.
