Seals Sweep Roughnecks, Win 9-4
March 5, 2022 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
San Diego Seals News Release
The San Diego Seals are back in the win column after defeating the Calgary Roughnecks on Friday night at Pechanga Arena. The Seals' 9-4 win clinched the season series sweep against the West Division foe and was the third time this season the team has held their opponent to four goals.
"This was an all-around team win," said General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill. "It's hard beating a team three times and they were aggressive all night. They were fighting for their lives out there, we knew how important this game was to them, and I'm proud of our guys for pulling out a big win."
Goaltender Frank Scigliano was lights out in the win making 50 saves on the night, including his 3,000th career saves. The Seals defense held the Roughnecks to only one goal in the first half, limiting the opponent's aggressive offense the entire night. Rookie Patrick Shoemay led the team scooping up nine loose balls in the game.
"I've gotta give props to our entire defense," said Scigliano. "We're all pulling on the same chain and it really shows. We have each other's backs and are willing to pay the price. We'll take this win, celebrate tonight, and set our focus on next week."
Forward Wesley Berg dazzled in the win, scoring a SportsCenter Top 10 worthy around-the-world diving goal, and added a team-high five points on the night. Forward Austin Staats netted two goals, while Jeremy Noble, Zack Greer and Dane Dobbie each buried one.
"Playing with [Jeremy Noble] and Tre [Leclaire] out there we're really clicking," said Berg. "They're seeing the ball well and making it easy to score. Our offense is so dynamic, it's a different guy going off every night. We need to continue this momentum going into next week."
The Seals will welcome the Saskatchewan Rush next Friday, March 11 for the second of three matchups. This will be the third game of the team's four-game home-stand. Reserve your seats today at SealsLax.com.
