Bakersfield Blaze News Release

At times the ballpark sounded like a rattlesnake attack, but fortunately, it was just the souvenir maracas on Cinco de Mayo at Sam Lynn Ballpark, where the Bakersfield Blaze overcame 5 errors to beat the Modesto Nuts 7-6.

The game featured its share of theatrics, and the score went back and forth all night. In the first inning, Modesto took advantage of 2 Blaze errors to score a pair of unearned runs on Corey Dickerson's first of two home runs on the night. The Blaze came right back on Juan Duran's 2-run shot to tie the game at 2, if but briefly. In the 2nd inning, the Blaze committed its 3rd error, and Modesto cashed in another unearned run to lead 3-2.

At that point, the starters settled down. Chad Rogers and Christian Bergman (L, 3-2) traded zeroes for 2.5 innings, with Rogers working around Blaze error number 4. Pat Doyle (W, 2-1) came on to pitch for the Blaze in the 5th when Rogers' pitch count got run up, and did a fine job of settling the game into a better rhythm. In the bottom of the 5th, the Blaze tied the contest at 3 on an RBI single from Devin Lohman to plate catcher Chris Berset. Then, one inning later, the Blaze mounted another 2-out rally, this time sending 5 batters to the plate with 2 down, scoring 3, and grabbing a 6-3 lead.

The Nuts deposited back-to-back solo shots beyond the fence in the 7th inning to cut the Blaze lead to 6-5, with Dickerson hitting his 2nd of the night, and Jared Clark blasting one way up the sunscreen in center, but the Blaze pushed an insurance run across in the bottom half, and that run would prove to be the difference. Modesto plated 1 in the 8th, but Brian Pearl (S, 5) retired 4 straight, 2 on strikeouts, to slam the door, and send the Blaze home with a 7-6 victory. Interestingly, this is the second game this season in which the Blaze has committed 5 errors, and the team has won both.

With the victory, the Blaze improve to 16-12, and keep pace 2 games behind San Jose, who also won, in the Cal League North. The series and homestand wrap up Sunday afternoon at 1:15pm on Chevy Youth Baseball Kids Club Day, where all Kids Club members get in free! Great seats are still available, but if you cannot join the team at the yard, listen LIVE to all the action on the Gameday Audio page at BakersfieldBlaze.com, with Dan Besbris going on air for the pregame show at 1:05pm.
