Lancaster JetHawks News Release
STOCKTON, CA - Adam Bailey is making his case for a California Player of the Week honor. The outfielder hit two home runs for the second night in a row and drove in five runs to lead the Lancaster JetHawks to an 8-7 win over the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Bailey's second home run, a three-run shot, was part of a five-run top of the ninth inning that turned out to be crucial in the JetHawks victory. Lancaster had held a slim 3-2 advantage heading into the ninth inning before breaking the game open and taking an 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
Jorge De Leon, who had relieved starter Bobby Doran and retired the last two batters of the eighth, was shaky in the ninth. The right-hander allowed two doubles and a single to cut the JetHawks lead to four. With one out, Rashun Dixon hit a ground ball to second that skipped by Enrique Hernandez for an error and allowed two runs to score.
After a fly ball to center field that should have ended the game, Nino Leyja smashed a two-run home run to make the score 8-7. It gave the Ports five runs in the inning, matching the JetHawks total in the top half of the ninth.
De Leon was replaced by left-hander Patrick Urckfitz who faced Myrio Richard with two outs and nobody on base. Richard lined a ball that appeared to be headed to center field for a hit but Hernandez made a diving back-handed catch to secure the win and Urckfitz's second save of the season.
With the JetHawks down 1-0 in the fifth inning, Jonathan Meyer doubled home Erik Castro to tie the game 1-1. Bailey immediately followed with his first home run of the game, a line drive over the right field fence.
Bailey is 5-for-7 with four home runs and seven RBI in the first two games of the series.
Doran (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. The loss went to starter Josh Bowman (0-4) who allowed three runs in six innings. Reliever Anthony Capra gave up the five runs - three earned - in the ninth.
With the win, the JetHawks (14-15) guaranteed themselves a fourth consecutive series victory. The team has now won 10 of its last 13 games and is still in fourth place in the South Division, just two games behind first place High Desert. The loss was the sixth in a row for the Ports (11-17).
Lancaster looks for the sweep on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Banner Island Ballpark. Tyson Perez, who was called up from extended spring training on Saturday, will start in place of Wes Musick. Musick was promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi. Perez will go up against right-hander Blake Treinen (2-2, 4.22). First pitch is scheduled for 2:09 pm.
Lancaster returns to The Hangar on Monday, May 7 to take on the Bakersfield Blaze and begin a six game home stand. Great JetHawks ticket packages and single game tickets are on sale now.
