Series Finale Slips Away from Bees in Ninth
May 12, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
New Britain Bees News Release
(York, Penn.) Up two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the New Britain Bees couldn't keep down a furious rally by the York Revolution, falling 4-3 in the finale of the series and six-game road trip.
PITCHERS OF RECORD- W: Wes Alsup (1-0) | L: Craig Stem (0-2)
After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth inning, Bees' closer Craig Stem could not silence the bats of the Revolution in the ninth. With two runners on (due to a fielder's choice and a single), York second baseman Andres Perez launched a three-run home run to hand the Bees' their third walk-off loss of the season.
A night after scoring a combined 19 runs, both offenses managed little off both starting pitchers. After a pair of doubles brought home a run in the first inning for the Revolution, Bees' starter Kyle Simon settled down to deliver his fourth straight start of pitching five innings and allowing two runs or less (he also struck out six). York starter Jorge Martinez also allowed a single run in five innings of work, with the lone Bees' run off Martinez coming on a Brandon Chaves home run.
The bullpens of both teams exchanged scoreless innings until the top half of the eighth. With right-hander Michael Click on the hill for York, outfielder Jon Jones chased home Anthony Hewitt (pinch running for Craig Maddox, who had singled) and Jonathan Roof with a two-run triple to right field, giving the Bees their only lead of the night.
Left-hander Josh Outman will make the start tomorrow night as the Bees' return home to take on the Bridgeport Bluefish. The Bluefish will counter with right-hander R.J. Hively.
