Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Sugar Land, TX) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (6-13) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (12-8) 3-1 at Constellation Field on Wednesday night to even up the three game series against their Freedom Division foes at a victory apiece with the rubber game taking place on Thursday evening. The win snaps Bridgeport's season high eight game losing streak, and ends Sugar Land's five game winning streak, also a season high.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (1-1) picked up his first win in a Bluefish uniform, firing six impressive innings, allowing just one run on five hits, walking three and striking out five. The right hander was getting ahead of the Skeeters hitters all night long, throwing a total of 95 pitches (65 strikes) in 25 batters faced. After not registering a quality start in their first 15 games, Bridgeport starting pitchers have now collected three of such in their last four outings as they seem like they are starting to turn the corner on the mound. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Bryan Morgado (1-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits in six innings of work, walking one and striking out six while throwing a pair of wild pitchers and hitting one batter. Eric Niesen needed just five pitches to retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to notch his first save of the season.

Bridgeport took the early 2-0 lead off Morgado in the top half of the first inning on a two out, two run double right over the first base bag off the bat of Dan Johnson, scoring Luis Hernandez who singled and Jose Cuevas who drew a walk, and just five batters into the game the 'Fish had a two run edge. After a stretch of just one hit in twenty at bats, Johnson is beginning to come around offensively, having now registered a hit in six of his last seven games. After five scoreless innings, Sugar Land finally got to Albaladejo in the home half of the sixth inning. Jeff Dominguez laced a one out single and then proceeded to steal second base. Dominguez would be driven home by cleanup hitter Rene Tosoni as he took Albaladejo's fastball the other way for an opposite field RBI base knock to right, plating Dominguez, and just like that the Skeeters cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

Clinging to a one run lead, Bridgeport was looking for some insurance in the top of the ninth off Sugar Land reliever Roy Merritt. Wilkin Ramirez led off the frame with a single, and advanced to second base on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Luis Domoromo. Carlos Sosa reached on an error by shortstop and former Bluefish Josh Prince, and Ramirez advanced to third to put runners at the corners with one out. Rossmel Perez popped up to second base for out number two, and it appeared that Merrit may get out of the inning unscathed. Up stepped Ruben Sosa Jr., who was hitless in his first four at bats. That would quickly change as he brought home Ramirez with a beautiful drag bunt to the right side that was knocked down by the southpaw Merritt but he was unable to make the play, and the 'Fish upped the cushion to 3-1. Sosa Jr. extended his on base streak to a season high 17 consecutive games, and he also adds to his team lead in runs batted in with 12. Niesen shut the door on any signs of a Sugar Land comeback with a clean ninth inning of relief as Bridgeport was able to hang on for the much needed victory.
