Behind a stellar pitching performance the Calgary Vipers defeated the Chico Outlaws 7-2 in the first half of a double-header at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Vipers' starter Joe Sergent worked five innings and gave up only four hits and one run while striking out four for his second victory of the season. Carlos Duncan had a big game at the plate going two for three with two runs scored and two driven in as well. Calgary with the win even their second half record to 2-2.
Darryl Brinkley led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and after a Jorge Mejia sacrifice bunt and a Duncan walk, he scored on a Felix Jose run batted in single. Duncan scored to double the lead to 2-0 on a Drew Miller RBI base hit.
Calgary doubled the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning with a Duncan double and Jose's 12th homerun of the season.
The Outlaws got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning with a two out single by Jesse Kovacs and RBI double off the bat of Casey Garrison.
Insurance runs were added in the bottom of the sixth inning with a Patrick Arlis walk, Travis Drader single, and Colin Moro RBI base hit to start the scoring. After a Brinkley walk, Duncan knocked in two with a single for the 7-1 advantage.
Chico grabbed a run back in the top of the seventh with a leadoff base hit by Steve Boggs, a groundout moved him to second base, and he scored on a Garrison RBI single for the 7-2 final.
Jon Huizinga (1-2-2) pitched the final two innings of the game to record his second save of the year.
Game two of this double header will see Evan Greusel (6-2) take to the mound for the Vipers.
"Paint the Park Pink" weekend concludes Sunday July 20th at 1:35 PM (MDT) with another double-header to make up Friday's rain out. Nate Melek (3-2) will start Game 1 with Jordy Alexander (3-3) taking the ball for the back half of the twin bill.
Monday July 21st, Tuesday July 22nd, and Wednesday July 23rd the Yuma Scorpions come to town for a three game series with all games starting at 7:05 PM (MDT).
