Sens clinch playoff berth with 4-3 win against Moose

The Binghamton Senators won their third straight game on Saturday night and clinched a playoff berth for the third consecutive season as they defeated the visiting Manitoba Moose 4-3 before a sold out crowd at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

For the second straight night the Senators fell behind early in the contest when Lee Goren put one home for the Moose just 1:22 into the opening period.

Manitoba opened up a 2-0 lead at the 13:52 mark of the first thanks to a Jesse Schultz tally. Justin Morrison and Peter Sarno each picked up an assist on the goal.

Binghamton closed the gap to 2-1 with 2:16 left in the first period when rookie Brandon Bochenski picked up a power-play goal. Jason Spezza and Brian Pothier were credited with the assists.

The Sens then pulled even at two at the 6:32 point of the middle frame when Josh Langfeld scored his second goal in as many nights. Christoph Schubert picked up an assist and Pothier recorded his second helper of the contest on the tying goal.

Sens' captain Chris Kelly gave his club a 3-2 lead just under five minutes into the third period with assists going to Jesse Fibiger and Brandon Bochenski.

With Moose goaltender Alex Auld on the bench in favor of an extra attacker, Denis Hamel put the Sens up 4-2 with just 43 seconds left in the game. With the goal Hamel established a new career high for goals in a season with 35.

Manitoba tried to climb back into the game after giving up the empty net goal when Rick Rypien slipped the puck past Binghamton goaltender Ray Emery at the 19:49 mark of the third period. It was Rypien's first career professional goal.

Binghamton held off the Moose for the final 11 seconds to preserve the 4-3 win.

Ray Emery made the start for the Sens and stopped 23 of 26 shots. Alex Auld made 35 saves on 38 shot for the Moose.

Binghamton was 1 for 5 on the power play while Manitoba closed out the game 0 for 4.
