Senators Announce School Programs

February 20, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

In continuing to serve our educational community, the Harrisburg Senators have announced their 2009 school programs. The Senators new Hit the Books reading program presented by Capital Blue Cross along with the AAA school programs which include Academics, Attendance, and Attitude are all brand new for 2009. With these programs, the Senators are working with local schools to help maximize student achievement. As each program deals with something different, the Senators are giving every student at the participating schools the ability to earn a free ticket. These programs are free to schools or students making them win-win programs.

The Senators Hit the Books reading program helps boost interest among elementary school aged children by encouraging them to read books in an effort to earn free tickets to a game. Over the past ten years, the Senators have had over 100,000 children from over 250 schools participate in the program. To earn free tickets, students must read four books and have their teacher sign off acknowledging that the student read the books. Each student that achieves a "Home Run" receives two free tickets to one of the Hit the Books reading program games (4/21, 5/5, 5/6, 5/12, 5/26, 5/27, 6/2, 6/3, & 6/7). Their families and friends have the ability to purchase additional tickets at a discounted price.

The first of the three A's in our new AAA school programs is Academics. This program rewards those students that achieve the Honor Roll during a predetermined grading period. Each student that earns a place in their school's Honor Roll will receive a personalized Honor Roll membership card provided by the Senators. This card will grant complimentary admission to the honored student and one guest to each of our designated honor roll nights, which are 6/17, 7/23, & 8/4.

Second is the Attendance Classroom Champions program, which rewards students who achieve outstanding attendance levels. These students will receive a certificate presented to them by someone from the Senators at a special assembly. Students will also receive a coupon for a complimentary ticket to one of the Senators Classroom Champions Nights on either 6/16, 7/22 & 8/6.

The final new school program is the Attitude Student Achievement program. The Senators recognize that not every student can make the Honor Roll, but every student can improve. Schools that participate in the program have the teachers set goals for individual students. These goals could include good attendance for a period, not talking in class, turning in homework etc. When each student reaches their goal, they will receive a coupon for a complimentary ticket to one of the Senators Student Achievement nights 6/18, 7/21 & 8/5.

"We really want to help encourage kids to read and do well, and improve in school," according to Emily Winslow, Senators Director of Community Relations. "With these programs in place we can reward kids by bringing them out to the ballpark and recognizing them for their achievements."

These programs are open to all public, private and home schooled students throughout Central Pennsylvania. To sign up your school or classroom to participate in one of the school programs, please contact Emily Winslow at 717-231-4449 or via email at ewinslow@senatorsbaseball.com.
