Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OH â The Columbus Destroyers completed their inaugural season with a record of 6-10 and finished with a surge, going 3-2 in the final month of the regular season. The success of the team was in large part due to the excellence of wide receiver/defensive back Sedrick Robinson, who increased his productivity as the season progressed in becoming the team's top player. As result, Robinson was selected by the Destroyers players and coaches as the 2004 Columbus Destroyers Most Valuable Player.
Robinson went from being a solid complementary receiver to the team's go-to guy and most lethal offensive weapon by season's end. Alongside fellow receiver Cornelius White, the two became one of the top receiving duos in the AFL, both surpassing 1,000 yards receiving in 2004. Robinson finished his first season with Columbus second to White in receiving with 73 catches for 1,063 yards and 19 touchdowns in 16 games played. He was also the team's second-leading rusher, carrying the ball 22 times for 68 yards and six touchdowns.
But it was Robinson's ability to perform on special teams that set him apart from the rest. Robinson established himself as one of the top return men in the league after returning 72 kicks (2nd in AFL) for 1,580 yards (2nd in AFL) and five touchdowns (T-1st in AFL), giving him 2,711 all-purpose yards on the season (2nd in AFL). His five returns for a score set a Destroyers franchise record for a single season.
"We were thrilled when we were able to acquire Sedrick this past offseason," commented Destroyers Director of Football Operations Chris Spielman. "His best attribute is his versatility. He really did it all for us this season, playing wide receiver, defensive back and was tremendous in our return game."
Robinson extended his versatility beyond receiving and returning kicks to the passing game. He became a second quarterback on the field for the Destroyers, on the season completing 3-of-4 pass attempts for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
"The one guarantee we had each week was that we were going to get Sedrick's best effort both physically and mentally," said Spielman. "He always produced for us. We value his playing skills on the field and his leadership on and off the field."
Robinson, a four-year AFL veteran, saved his best for the last month of the season, gaining nearly half of his total offensive yardage in the month of May alone before being named the AFL's Offensive Player of the Month. His 353 all-purpose yards on May 9 versus Georgia were the second most in team history and his 238 kick return yards set a Destroyers single game franchise record. In addition, his 30 points scored and five touchdowns on May 9 tied a franchise high. Robinson had over 250 all-purpose yards three times in May (1st, 9th, 22nd) and finished the month with 15 total touchdowns scored (9 receiving, 3 rushing, 3 returns).
Both Robinson and White will return in 2005 and with the addition of rookie standout quarterback Ryan Vena, the Destroyers have a steady core of offensive weapons prime to make some noise in an offensively dominated league.
