Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA, FL -- The Tampa Bay Storm began the process of bringing back the core of the team that advanced to the Arena Football League playoffs for the 14th consecutive season, re-signing offensive specialist Freddie Solomon, WR/DB TT Toliver, and defensive specialists Tramain Jones and Jonathan Ordway.
All four players signed two-year contracts and would have become unrestricted free agents on July 1.
The re-signing of the four players allows the Storm to return their leading receiver, best all-purpose player, and top three tacklers from the 2004 season.
"We're excited and happy that Freddie, TT, Tramain, and Jonathan all wanted to remain with us," said Storm head coach Tim Marcum. "By bringing these guys back, we're well on our way to keeping the nucleus of the team together. All four of these players know what it takes to win a championship, and by re-signing these guys I certainly think we're well on our way to getting back to the ArenaBowl."
Solomon proved to be one of the top offensive threats in the AFL during the past two seasons. In 2004 he finished fifth in the league with 204 points in 15 games. On the season Solomon led the Storm in receptions (92), receiving yards (1199), and receiving touchdowns (32). He is also the Storm's single-season record holder in receptions and receiving yards and already ranks fourth in Storm history in career receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.
Toliver, who finished his third season with the Storm but played in just his first complete season, is one of the top Ironmen in the game, having earned All-Ironman honors in 2004. Toliver led the Storm with 2,095 all-purpose yards and finished second on the team in scoring. Toliver was the team's top kick returner, collecting 1,233 yards and four touchdowns on 60 returns. Toliver finished the season third on the team with 64 catches for 749 yards. Defensively he recorded 54.5 tackles with six pass breakups, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and a team-leading four three interceptions.
Jones and Ordway were given the reigns to the Storm secondary starting in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Soul and transformed a porous Storm defensive backfield into a strength of the team.
Jones, who completed his first full season in Tampa Bay, led the team in tackles after taking over at one of the defensive specialist spots in Week 4. He had 63.0 tackles, which ranks sixth-best in Storm history. He also added nine pass breakups, 0.5 tackle for loss, one forced fumble, and tied Toliver for the team lead with three interceptions.
Ordway joined Jones in the defensive backfield and finished second on the team with 58.5 tackles. He also recorded 21 pass breakups and an interception. His 21 pass breakups rank 10th on the Storm all-time single-season list. His 22 passes defensed (pass breakups + interceptions) were the sixth highest total in the AFL in 2004.
With the re-signings of Solomon, Toliver, Jones, and Ordway, the Storm have a total of 11 players under contract for the 2005 season. Also under contract are WR/DBs Clif Dell and Shevin Smith, FB/LB David White, and linemen Louis Williams, Rod Williams, Kelvin Kinney, and Nyle Wiren.
The Storm also have a number of free agents with whom they have exclusive rights to negotiate with until June 30. Those players include QBs Shane Stafford, Pat O'Hara, and Stoney Case, WR/DBs Carlos James and Shea Showers, WR/LBs Lawrence Samuels and David Saunders, FB/LBs Andre Bowden and Umar Muhammad, K Matt George, and linemen DJ Bleisath, Ernest Certain, Darion Conner, DJ Cooper, Mike Lawson, and Evan Pilgrim.
