Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Over 160,000 votes were cast this past week in the first round of the Fresno Famous Bobblehead Tournament, presented by The Fresno Bee and PG&E. Second round voting is open now at FresnoGrizzlies.com and features matchups such as Ickey Woods vs. Lorenzo Neal, Derek Carr vs. Pat Hill, and Steve Perry vs. Mayor Ashley Swearengin. Voting for the 16 second-round matchups runs until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18th, with the third round beginning on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. and closing at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 23rd.
The first round included many upsets, including CBS47/KSEE24 Sports Director Andrew Marden defeating Branden Hampton, who was unable to rally enough of his 32 million social media followers. Greg from Q97 vs. Carmen from B95 generated a matchup-high 18,236 votes, with 55% swaying Greg's direction. Late week comebacks allowed Trail Blazers center Robin Lopez, Sheriff Margaret Mims, Fresno Bee writer Rick Bentley, and rapper Fashawn to advance to the second round.
The largest margin of victory was by the late Jerry Tarkanian, who defeated GB3 owner George Brown by 3,140 votes. The smallest margin of victory was secured by KSEE24 evening news anchor Stefani Booroojian, who defeated the Waving Lady on 41 by only 94 votes.
The overall winner of the tournament, announced on April 6th, will have their likeness placed on a bobblehead that is given to the first 1,500 fans at the Grizzlies Saturday, August 22nd home game. The in-game entertainment will also be themed around the winner.
To determine who wins, the Grizzlies are running an online March Madness style bracket on FresnoGrizzlies.com that allows fans to vote for their favorite(s). All those voting are encouraged to use #FresnoFamous and tag the Fresno Grizzlies in social media posts. An updated bobblehead tournament bracket is attached to reference the matchups and allow fans to follow the remaining five rounds of voting.
