Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Sky Sox Broadcaster Dan Karcher added another honor to his impressive resume when he was presented with the Award of Excellence from the Colorado Broadcasters Association for the 'Best Sports Coverage by an Individual or Team in a Major Market' at their annual awards dinner in Denver last Saturday.

The winning call came during the Sky Sox 2014 Home Opener against the Round Rock Express on April 11 at Security Service Field when infielder Drew Garcia belted a game-winning walk-off three-run home run, giving the Sky Sox an 11-10 win in comeback fashion. The game was aired on AM-1300 KCSF, "The Animal" in Colorado Springs.

"That undoubtedly was the most exciting game of the season last year and it just so happened to be the home opener which added to the drama. And the game winning blow could not have come from a more unlikely candidate than Drew Garcia, who was not exactly known for his power. That's what made it so shocking and led to a very spontaneous call. All thanks to Drew, who was truly one of the one of the great guys on the team last year."

This marked the second time Karcher has taken home the award, having previously been awarded for his 2006 call of Sky Sox first baseman Carlos Rivera's game-winning blast.

Dan is entering his 26 th season providing the play-by-play call of Sky Sox Baseball, making him the longest tenured play-by-play broadcaster with one Professional or Division-I team in the entire state. He is also beginning his 31st season of baseball play-by-play, including the last 27 at the Triple-A level. He spent the 1989 season in Des Moines with the Iowa Cubs. Other stops along the way for Karcher included Bakersfield and Fresno, California and Springfield, Illinois. During his 27 -year habitation in Colorado Springs, Karcher has hosted a variety of local sports shows, including "Falcontalk" with Air Force head Football Coach Fisher DeBerry, "The First Team," "Sox and Rox" with the Denver Post beat writer Mike Klis, and a coast-to-coast sports talk program on American Sports Radio Network. Karcher, who has filled-in on several Rockies broadcasts over the years, has also served as the lead play-by-play voice of RMAC Football and Basketball telecasts, as well as the Junior College World Series on the Altitude Sports and Entertainment TV Network.
