Bangor Lumberjacks News Release

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, a proud member of the Northeast League, announced that they have made the second round of cuts today from the 2004 spring training camp.

The Lumberjacks released OF Hector Nunez, the first overall draft pick in the 2004 Northeast League tryout camp. Nunez saw limited action with the Joliet (IL) Jackhammers last year after coming out of retirement. He was originally signed by the Detroit Tigers as a non-drafted free agent in 1995 out of his native Dominican Republic. Nunez hit .387 with 11 homers and 54 RBI in 1998 for the DSL Tigers before being promoted to Single-A Oneonta where he batted .284 with 15 RBI in 33 games before being released.

The Lumberjacks also traded OF Schuyler Doakes to the Aces, the Northeast League's new travel team for future considerations. A graduate of Jackson State (MS) University, the speedy Doakes came to the Northeast League last year with the Ambassadors. While with Allentown, the Detroit native hit .317 with 19 RBI and 16 steals. Originally, a 14th round selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 1998 draft, Doakes batted .291 with the Jacks last year and stole 27 bases.

In their final move of the day, the Lumberjacks placed INF Lance Woodcock on the Inactive List.

The Lumberjacks must submit their final roster of 22 players by 5 PM eastern time on Monday, May 24. There are currently 24 players on the roster, including 13 pitchers.
