Pioneers Close out Exhibition Schedule with Win

Elmira, NY- Six pitchers combined to toss nine innings of one run baseball while Ryan Kenning's fourth inning solo home run helped propel the Pioneers to a 2-1 victory over the North East League Aces on Monday night.

The Pioneers got things started in the second inning when Jobu Morita smacked a two out double to set up Ryan Smith's RBI single giving Elmira a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers stretched their lead to two in the fourth when Kenning launched an opposite field homer to left-center field.

On the mound the Pioneers benefited from a solid outing from starter Julio LaSalle who tossed three shutout innings, striking out three while allowing just two hits before turning things over to Saul Solvison in the fourth who tossed one shutout inning. In the fifth inning Chris Zallie entered the game and threw two scoreless frames to pick up the win. Brad Cook came on in the seventh inning and allowed just one hit in a scoreless inning of work. The Aces lone run came in the eighth inning off Reliever Eric Sparks who allowed one run on just one hit and two walks. In the ninth Matt Elfeldt made his second appearance of the exhibition season picking up his first save of the spring in a perfect inning of work.

The Pioneers next game is on Thursday, May 27 at 7:05 p.m. when the Pioneers host the New Haven County Cutters in Elmira's home and season opener. Thursday is also ES & L Opening Night Fireworks with Big Fox.
