PORTLAND, Ore. - Reno 1868 FC picked up three big points with a 2-1 win over Portland Timbers 2. Reno trailed at the half before two goals in two minutes by Danny Musovski and Seth Casiple put the team on top, snapping Portland's six-match winning streak. The win moves Reno to 7-4-5 on the season, while Portland falls to 7-3-6.
"I told the guys to be patient at halftime," said head coach Ian Russell. "I think we took advantage of our chances well in the second half."
Brayan Hurtado got Portland on the board first with a 14th-minute goal off of an assist by Jose Carlos Anguiano. The early goal put the home team up 1-0, which would hold through the rest of the first half. Reno trailed at halftime despite outshooting Portland 10-5 in the first 45 minutes.
"It was a little bit similar to Pheonix where we had chances but came into the break down 1-0," said Russell. "There was still a bunch of time. Llearning from Phoenix we may not have had as many chances in the second half, but we took advantage of them."
The first 15 minutes of the second half went by before Reno came alive with two goals in two minutes to take the lead. Casiple put a ball in the air in front of net, and Musovski made the most of his opportunity. Musovski headed the ball into the net to tie things up. This was the second goal for Musovski on the season, with his first coming in the June 15 win over LA Galaxy II.
Just two minutes later, Casiple scored a goal of his own to take the lead for 1868. The goal is his third on the season, moving him into a tie with Raul Mendiola for third on the team behind Brian Brown's eight and Corey Hertzog's seven.
Midfielder Lindo Mfeka made his return to action, coming in as a substitute for Hertzog in the 76th minute. Mfeka last appeared on May 18th in a 1-1 draw at Tacoma.
The boys in blue will be back playing in front of the Northern Nevada crowd on Saturday, taking on Sacramento Republic FC at Greater Nevada Field at 7:15 p.m. PT. The Donner Pass Derby matchup will feature a t-shirt giveaway to the first 1,000 fans.
