Major League Soccer announced Sunday that Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco has been named into the MLS Best XI for the 2015 season. The award recognizes the League's top 11 players in a common soccer formation as nominated by MLS players, club management, and media. This marks the third accolade for Giovinco after winning both the 2015 Audi MLS Golden Boot and MLS Newcomer of the Year.
Giovinco had a record setting year in his first season with the Reds and in MLS. He scored 22 goals and added 16 assists which set an MLS record for the most goals and assists combined in a single season with 38. He became first player in MLS history to record at least 20 goals and 10 assists in a single season. In addition, Giovinco was involved in two or more goals in 12 games during the 2015 regular season - the most of any player in MLS history. He also broke a 15-year-old MLS single-season record for shots in a season (181). Giovinco also set a number of club records becoming the first player in club history to record two hat tricks in MLS league play including the first by a Toronto FC player at BMO Field in MLS league play. He is second on Toronto FC's all-time goal list with 22 goals (MLS league play).
Giovinco won back-to-back MLS Player of the Month awards for July and August. He was also named MLS Player of the Week three times this past season (Weeks 13, 14, 19). In addition, he was named to the MLS Team of the Week on ten occasions (Weeks 9, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 23, 29, 30). He also won MLS Goal of the Week for Week 23.
Giovinco is a finalist for the 2015 Landon Donovan Most Valuable Player award along with Kei Kamara (Columbus) and Benny Feilhaber (Sporting KC). The winner will be announced on Wednesday, December 2.
