Erie SeaWolves News Release
(Erie, PA) - The Erie SeaWolves, Double-A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball and the Office of Mayor Joseph Sinnott, will host SeaWolves Skills Day on Saturday, August 29 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Jerry Uht Park.
SeaWolves Skills Day is part of a nationwide Play Ball initiative launched by Major League Baseball and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. SeaWolves Skills Day is one of over 80 events being hosted in August to promote and encourage participation in the game of baseball.
The event is free to the public and features baseball activity stations led by SeaWolves players and front office staff. Kids ages 4-12 can participate in a variety of baseball activities on the field including baserunning, fielding (infield ground balls and outfield fly balls), hitting, and target toss. Kids who complete all of the stations will receive a free ticket to a SeaWolves game and a baseball (while supplies last).
Attendees of all ages are encouraged to bring their gloves to play catch on the field. Baseball spikes or cleats are not permitted during this event. Activity stations do not require that participants own a baseball glove. All skill levels are welcome.
"We are excited to partner with Mayor Sinnott and his staff to encourage Erie to play ball," SeaWolves President Greg Coleman said. "We are thankful to be Erie's hometown team, and we look forward to giving more people the chance to experience the game we love."
"SeaWolves Skills Day is a great opportunity for Erie's youth to get out on the field and participate in activity stations directly with ballplayers and staff," Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott said. "The immediate commitment from the SeaWolves organization to participate in this nationwide initiative is an excellent example of recognizing a need and working together for the youth of our community."
Play Ball is a collaboration between Major League Baseball and USA Baseball to encourage widespread participation in all forms of baseball activities among all age groups, especially youth. PlayBall.org serves as the initiative's online home and is accessible via MLB.com, USABaseball.com and other partner websites. Coaching tips and parent resources will be prominent components of the site. PlayBall.org also gives parents, coaches and kids information on how to participate in Play Ball activities, links to youth-related news and events, and searchable maps to help find local community leagues. Health and safety information, including on MLB's Pitch Smart and Play Sun Smart programs, also will be available.
The SeaWolves open a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Colorado Rockies) tonight at 7:05 p.m. The first 500 kids (ages 12 & under) will receive a voucher for a free Smith's hot dog, Utz chips, and fountain drink thanks to 94.7 BOB FM. It's also Two-Buck Tuesday in the Bud Light Beer Garden. Fans can enjoy $2 drink specials in the Bud Light Beer Garden through the sixth inning.
