Senators Fall by Walk-Off in Akron

Alex Lavisky's walk-off RBI double lifted the Akron RubberDucks to a 4-3 win over the Harrisburg Senators Tuesday at Canal Park. The walk-off loss was the 10th of its kind for the Senators (57-65) in 2015.

Senators' starter Matt Purke struggled greatly with his control early on, but battled well. Akron loaded the bases against him in the first inning with a walk, a single and a hit by pitch, but scored just one run on a passed ball by Pedro Severino. After recording the first out of the second inning, Purke walked the bases loaded. Again, Akron managed just one run on a fielder's choice. However, on the fielder's choice, Purke injured himself running off the mound, and he was forced to leave the game.

Dakota Bacus entered for Purke, and stranded two runners in the second before allowing a run by hitting a batter with the bases loaded. But once again, that was the only run Akron could muster despite loading the bases. Nick Lee followed Bacus with two scoreless innings of his own in which he struck out two. Erik Davis allowed a single and two baserunners in the ensuing two innings, but he also had a scoreless outing.

Harrisburg scored its first run in the second inning when Drew Vettleson singled, stole second, stole third and scored when the throw to third went into left field. Isaac Ballou's solo home run in the top of the fifth inning cut Akron's lead to 3-2. Three straight singles in the seventh inning by Ballou, Reegie Corona and Adrian Sanchez, who picked up the RBI, tied the game 3-3.

Paul Demny came on in the ninth inning and allowed Akron to place runners on first and third with two out, but Demny struck out Ronny Rodriguez with a high fastball to send the game to extras. Brian Goodwin reached second base with one out in the top of the 10th but was stranded there after a pair of strikeouts. In the bottom of the 10th, Demny allowed the leadoff man, Jordan Smith, to reach. Smith moved to second on a wild pitch, but Demny recorded back-to-back outs to keep Smith at second. However, Akron's Lavisky came through with a deep drive to center field to win the game.

The Senators outhit Akron 11-6, but the RubberDucks drew nine walks - a season-most issued by Senators pitching. The two teams combined to strand 20 runners and go 2-for-26 with runners in scoring position.
