Elmira Pioneers News Release

Pioneers LHP Sean Brummet fired 7 solid innings of 4-hit shutout ball leading the way to a win in the first game of the season. Brommet struck-out a Northern League season high 10 batters allowing just 1 walk. He recorded 9 outs in a row from the 4th to the 7th but had to work his way out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th to preserve the shutout.

The loss was the first of the year for the Berkshire Black Bears (3-1) who were previously the last remaining unbeaten team in the Northern league East.

Matt Pike and Julio Perez each worked 1 inning out of the pen to complete the gem.

Rod Smith set the tone for the game with a solo HR on only the 2nd pitch of the evening off Yfrain Linares (0-1). Smith finished 2-3 with a double, HR, 2 walks, 3 runs and 2 sb's. The Pioneers swiped 4 bags on the evening.

Back to back doubles by Bobby Hill and Rod Smith in the 5th led to a 2-run inning giving the Pioneers a comfortable 5-0 advantage.

Hill finished 2-4 with a pair of doubles and an rbi.

The shutout is the first of the season for Elmira and end a 2-game losing streak. The 6 runs scored by the offense is a season high. The Pioneers made several nice plays in the field to help Brummet out early. Most notably was Ron Bush's back-hand pick of a ball up the middle throwing out the batter while leaping in the air falling away from first base. Later, Osmani Garcia made a diving stop at third on a hot-shot. From his knees, Garcia was able to begin a spectacular 5-4-3 double-play.

Game 2 of the 6 game road-trip is Wednesday at 7 with Greg Keagle (0-1) going up against Berkshire RHP Ken Henderson (0-0).
