Elmira Pioneers News Release
The Brockton Rox took 3 out of 4 games in the opening series of the season with a 6-2 decision Monday night at Dunn Field in Elmira, NY. The Pioneers fell to 1-3 on the regular season. Elmira hits the road for 6 straight before returning home next Monday.
The Rox scored 3 runs in the 4th inning off Justin Stine (0-1) on 3 hits, an error and a walk. Carlos Rosario hit a 2-run HR (his 2nd) in the 7th inning.
The Pioneers had plenty of chances early in the game as they stranded 8 runners on base in the first 3 innings. Elmira left the bases loaded in the 1st and 2nd innings but only had 1 run to show for their efforts resulting from a bases-loaded walk to Norm Hutchins. Brockton starter Chris Hill (1-0) battled his way back to retire 10 consecutive batters from the 3rd through the 6th innings to keep the Pioneers from getting any further significant chances.
The Pioneers out-hit Brockton 9-8 as Elmira stranded 12 runners total and the Rox left only 4.
The Pioneers scored their final run in the 8th inning on an rbi single by Sandy Vasquez driving in Osmani Garcia. But Kevin Lynn came out of the bullpen and got Ron Bush to pop-out ending the threat.
Brian Jones went 3-for-4 on the night to improve his season total to 8-for-14. The Pioneers catcher had at least 2 hits in 3 of the 4 games and carries a 4-game hit streak into the road swing.
The Pioneers head to Pittsfield, Mass. to take on the expansion Berkshire Black Bears (3-0) Tuesday night at 7:05. Former Angels farmhand LHP Sean Brummet makes his Northern League debut for the Pioneers and then pitching coach Greg Keagle will be the starter for the Wednesday night game.
