Victoria Seals News Release

Calgary, AB - Opening up the second half of a home-and-home series against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals made their second trip to Foothills Stadium on Monday night. Making his second start against the Seals, Erik Dessau (2-1) took to the mound against Roberto Sotolongo (0-0), returning to action after spending two weeks on the inactive list.

For the first time this season, Victoria would open the scoring against the Vipers in the top of the first inning. A lead-off double from Wilver Perez, followed up by an error to third basemen Ivan Reyes gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Seals would double the score in the second frame, when Bret LeVier cashed in Matt Kavanaugh with an RBI single.

A quick response from the Vipers, however, would knot the game at two in the bottom of the inning. Singles from Clint Johnston and Colin Moro, followed by a sacrifice fly from Drew Miller cut the Seals lead in half. Then, an infield hit from Fehlandt Lentini drew an overthrow from LeVier, allowing Moro to cross home plate for the 2-2 tie. Calgary then took the lead from Victoria in the bottom of the third, using a base hit from Moro to score Jorge Mejia for a 3-2 advantage.

The Vipers then extended their lead in the fourth frame after back-to-back walks to Lentini and Mejia loaded the bases and Mark Okano reached on an error to Matt Kavanaugh which also scored Guarno. With the bases still full, Lentini scored on a near instant replay at home plate, when again Kavanaugh could not hold onto the ball as the runner charged home. Finally, a walk to Miller capped off a three-run inning for Calgary, leaving them up 6-2 on the Seals.

Victoria would begin to chip away at the Vipers' lead in the next half inning when a double to the wall from Josh Arhart scored Perez and Carlos Duncan, who had reached on a single and an error, respectively. The Seals would then narrow the deficit to just one run in the sixth inning as Kavanaugh and LeVier both registered doubles to bring the score to 6-5. Victoria then drew even in the top of the seventh, when Arhart picked up his third RBI of the game with a single to score Duncan, tying the contest at 6-6.

The Seals capped off the comeback in the top of the ninth with a lead-off double from Perez followed by an RBI double from Jamar Hill and a sacrifice fly from Chris Van Rossum gave Victoria six unanswered runs and an 8-6 lead. Closer Javier Garcia returned to the mound in the bottom of the frame, allowed just one base runner en route to his league-leading sixth save on the season for an 8-6 Victoria win.

Victoria reliever Ethan Katz collects his first win of the season with two innings worked, while Dallas Mahan falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss. Victoria's offense was led by Josh Arhart's three RBI's, helping him finish 3-for-4 at the plate.
