Orange County Flyers News Release

San Ramon, CA. June 16, 2009 - The Golden Baseball League announced today that the Orange County Flyers have sold the contract of RHP Brian Lawrence to the San Diego Padres. The veteran right who was a key part of the San Diego Padres rotation early in the decade made only one start for the Flyers and was so impressive that the Padres purchased his contract immediately.

Lawrence, 33, was drafted in the 17th round out of Northwestern State University of Louisianna in 1998 by the San Diego Padres. He rose through the farm system rapidly and debuted in the big leagues in 2001. Between 2002 and 2004 he was a mainstay of the staff as he logged more than 200 innings and won more than 10 games each season, with a high of 15 victories in one year. After the 2005 season he was traded to the Washington Nationals for Vinny Castilla, but never pitched for the team as he tore his labrum and rotator cuff in spring training. Back in 2007 with the New York Mets he started six games but was released after the season. He was in the independent Atlantic League in 2008 and began this year in the Golden Baseball League where his first start for the Orange County Flyers was a complete game one-hitter that quickly caught the attention of the Padres, his original major league organization. San Diego will send him to AAA to see how he looks and if he continues to impress he should be back in the major leagues this season.

Lawrence is the is the 10th Golden Baseball League player in 2009 to be acquired by a major league organization.
