June 3, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Opening up a three-game series against the defending Golden Baseball League Champion Orange County Flyers on Tuesday night, the Victoria Seals were also looking for their second consecutive win at Royal Athletic Park. Turning to Cardoza Tucker Jr. (0-0) on the mound, the Flyers were up against Austin Bibens-Dirks (0-0) who made his second start for the Seals.

With the Victoria starter retiring the nine of the first ten Orange County batters, six of them by strikeout, the Seals opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. A double from Chris Van Rossum, followed by a walk to Jamar Hill put two men on for Sergio Pedroza's second home run of the year, putting the Seals out front 3-0.

A response from the Flyers came in the top of the fourth, however, as a double from Fernando Pacheco, followed by an RBI single from Nick Guerra, and capped off by another RBI double from Shane Buschini brought Orange County within one.

Still ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Victoria again stretched their lead to three with an RBI single from Van Rossum, and Pedroza's fourth RBI on a single two batters later.

After the Flyers earned another run back in the sixth frame, the biggest threat on the night came in the eighth inning. After Victoria reliever Graham Campbell loaded the bases with none out, closer Javier Garcia came in to retire three straight batters to end the inning.

Garcia would return in the top of the ninth, earning his third strikeout of the game en route to his second save in a row at Royal Athletic Park. With the victory, the Seals win the first game of a series for the first time in 2009, a 5-3 final over the Flyers.

Austin Bibens-Dirks gets his first win of the year to improve to 1-0, while Orange County starter Cardoza Tucker Jr. falls to 0-1 with the loss. The Seals' bats were led by Sergio Pedroza, who picked up 4 RBI's while finishing 3-for-3 at the plate. Fernando Pacheco was 2-for-3 and with an RBI in a losing effort for the Flyers.
