Calgary, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks lost to the San Diego Seals 17-14 Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, in the first of three matchups with the SoCal team for the 2022-23 season.
After an early goal for Calgary was waived off, the visitors went on a five-goal streak before Jesse King found the back of the net to put the Roughnecks on the board. Shane Simpson added another to the tally for Calgary however the Seals took the first quarter 7-2. Despite early goals from King, Zach Currier and Tanner Cook, San Diego kept their momentum going into the second quarter and took the score to 13-5 after 30 minutes.
The Roughnecks fought back coming off the half time break, with Calgary's offence outscoring San Diego in the final two quarters. The Seals scored two early in the third before Dan Taylor, Simpson, Kyle Waters and Cook went on a four-goal run to swing the scoring race in Calgary's favour. The Roughnecks continued to find the back of the net into the fourth with King and Tyler Pace each netting two and Haiden Dickson adding a single, however it was not enough to close the gap.
Tyler Pace was the top performer for Calgary tonight, netting two goals and assisting on seven, finishing with a season-best 9 points. Tonight's assist tally takes him to 104 for his career. Captain Jesse King was the top goal scorer with four, whilst goaltender Christian Del Bianco provided four assists to his teammates.
With the Roughnecks now 2-1 on the season, the team hit the road in week 6 travelling to Denver for their first visit with the Colorado Mammoth Saturday January 7th. Fans can view the game on TSN Direct, face-off 7:00pm mst.
