Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Following another air-tight affair at Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals squared off against the Tucson Toros in game three on Thursday. In a matchup of pitching aces, the Toros turned to Lorenzo Barcelo (4-3) on the hill, while the Seals went with Isaac Hess (5-0) in return.
After a scoreless first inning, Victoria would jump out to an early lead on a solo home run from Jamar Hill. Two pitches later, Josh Arhart doubled the Victoria advantage with a round-tripper of his own to give the Seals a 2-0 lead through two innings.
After the Toros scored a lead-off single from Curt Miaso in the top of the third, the home side answered right back in the bottom half of the frame. A single from Carlos Duncan, followed by a double from Wilver Perez brought Hill back to the dish for his second home run of the contest to put Victoria up 5-1. Dustin Yount then responded with a solo shot of his own for Tucson to kick off the fourth to pull the Toros within three.
Back-to-back singles from Duncan and Perez then kicked off another big inning for Victoria in the fifth, as Hill launched another three-run home run to put the Seals up 8-1. Then, a double from Matt Kavanaugh, along with a single from Brett Flowers and a two-RBI double from Chris Van Rossum left Victoria up 10-2 after just five frames.
In the sixth inning, a two-out double from Andre Marshall narrowed the Victoria lead once again on an error to Brett Flowers with Chris Bodishbaugh on the mound for the Seals. But it would be Jamar Hill at it again in the sixth, crushing his fourth home run of the contest over the left field fence to not only tie a Golden Baseball League record, but also extend the Victoria lead back to 11-3.
Another momentum swing in the seventh inning gave Tucson life when Ryan Priddy hit the game's seventh home run, a two-run shot, to bring the score to 11-5. With Hill back to the plate in the eighth frame, accompanied by a standing ovation, a fielder's choice brought in Victoria's 12th run for a seven-run lead headed to the ninth.
With Graham Campbell on to pitch in the game's final frame, the pesky Toros again rallied to make things interesting. A lead-off error, followed by singles from Luis Apodaca and Priddy filled the bases for Skip Adams, who brought the visitors within three with a grand slam home run. An overthrow to third base and a base hit from Mayobanex Santana then pulled Tucson within just one run, as they put together a six-run top of the ninth inning.
Javier Garcia finally put an end to the contest with a strikeout to Miaso, though, earning Isaac Hess his league-leading sixth win of the season in a 12-11 Seals victory. Lorenzo Barcelo takes the loss for the Toros, allowing three of Jamar Hill's four home runs en route to a remarkable 8 RBI outing at Royal Athletic Park.
