Sea Dogs Avoid Sweep Attempt, Claim Finale, 7-2

RICHMOND, VA - The Portland Sea Dogs (48-66) parlayed a pair of three-run innings into a, 7-2, victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (62-52) in front of 7,413 at The Diamond on Sunday night. The win allowed the Sea Dogs to avoid an attempted sweep by the Squirrels, who finish their home stand at a record of 2-4.
Ryan Khoury, who drove in four runs in game two of the series, put Portland on top early, catching a mistake from Squirrels' right-hander Justin Fitzgerald in the first inning. Khoury homered over the left-center field wall, putting the Sea Dogs in front, 1-0.
Richmond drew even with an unearned run in the second inning off of Portland right-hander Alex Wilson. Juan Perez led off the inning and chopped a double over top of third baseman Will Middlebrooks. Wendell Fairley followed and sent a soft-liner to the shortstop Heiker Meneses. He played it on one hop, but threw low to first base. Jon Hee couldn't pick it, and Perez scored to tie the ballgame when the ball bounced over the Richmond dugout.
The ballgame remained square into the fifth inning, when the Sea Dogs put together a three-run uprising to chase Fitzgerald. Meneses led off with an infield-single, and Jeremy Hazelbaker followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Hazelbaker was picked off, but Khoury followed with an RBI single to give Portland the lead, 2-1. Fitzgerald issued a walk to Alex Hassan before being lifted in favor of right-hander Edwin Quirarte. Mark Wagner greeted him with a single before Middlebrooks delivered a two-run single into right field for a 4-1 lead.
Fitzgerald (8-6) was saddled with his sixth loss of the season over 4 1/3 innings. He was touched up for four earned runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out five. The unearned run conceded by Wilson (9-4) in the second was the only damage the Squirrels did against him. He earned the win over six innings, allowing the lone run on six hits. He walked none and struck out five as he took his ninth win of the season.
The Sea Dogs plated three runs against Richmond left-hander David Quinowski in the top of the ninth inning. Runs scored in the inning on an error, a wild-pitch and an RBI double from Middlebrooks.
Left-hander Cesar Cabral handled the Squirrels in the seventh and eighth innings before turning it over to right-hander Blake Maxwell in the ninth. He allowed a solo-home run to Jackson Williams that capped the scoring, but finished off the win without further incident.
The Squirrels will enjoy an off-day on Monday before traveling to Harrisburg, PA, on Tuesday. They will open a three-game series with the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) at Metro Bank Park on Tuesday night at 7 PM. LHP Chuck Lofgren (2-0, 0.92) will make the start in the opener for the Squirrels against RHP Erik Arnesen (6-3, 2.53) for the Senators.
