Sea Dawgs Win a Close Season Opener 93-90

The Wilmington Sea Dawgs withstood a hard late charge by the PrimeTime Players of Charlotte to win the season opener 93-90. The Dawgs were led on offense by Shelton Carter with 26 points and Damien Brown with 17.

The game started slowly for the Dawgs, as the Players used their size to sprint out to a 11-3 lead and the Sea Dawgs were as cold as ice from outside. Only PrimeTime's sketchy free throw shooting kept the Dawgs within reach. Then the Sea Dawgs unleashed their tenacious defense, and coupled with some effective outside shooting from Brown, Joseph King, and J.J. Cook, eventually took the lead in the first quarter and kept it through the second, finishing the half at 48-42.

The Sea Dawgs held the lead for much of the second half, but a strong fourth quarter rally by the PrimeTime Players, led by Street and Pigford, eliminated that margin and gave the Players a small lead. The game was then back and forth until a late bucket by Masevai Davis and a free throw by Zach Hermann pushed the lead out to four. The Players cut it a one point lead with a three by Watson. But a pair of free throws by Shelton Carter pushed it back out to three and the Sea Dawg defense kept the Players from scoring for the final 11 seconds.

The Sea Dawgs are back in action at the Schwartz Center Friday at 7:00PM to host the Carolina Gladiators.
