July 11, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(Staten Island, NY)-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers dropped the opening game of a three game series on Wednesday night, 5-1 to the Staten Island Yankees. The game started out as a pitcher's duel, but Junior Soto changed that with two homeruns and four RBI as the Scrappers were limited to just four hits.
The Scrappers entered the night with the top offense in the New York Penn League but were held in check by a trio of Yankee pitchers. The lone run the Scrappers scored came on a solo homerun off the bat of Richie Palacios. Palacios, a New York City native, was playing his first game in his home city as a professional.
Former Cleveland Indians minor leaguer Soto would put the Yankees on top with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. He would then put the game out of reach with a three run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Alex Royalty started and took a no decision in 3.0 innings of work. Royalty allowed just 5 hits while striking out 2. Adam Scott followed with three innings of relief work. Scott allowed 2 hits while striking out 5. Luis Santos (3-1) took the loss in 0.2 innings of work. He allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit. Santos walked 1. Luis Araujo would go 1.1 innings in relief. Araujo allowed 3 earned runs on 1 hit. He walked 2 and struck out 1.
The Scrappers (16-8) and Yankees continue their series on Thursday night. Zach Draper gets the start for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is 7:00. The Scrappers return home on Saturday, July 14th to face the Hudson Valley Renegades.
