Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Calgary, AB. - The Western Hockey League has announced plans to present the Scott Munro Memorial Trophy to the 2014-15 regular season champion Brandon Wheat Kings before Thursday's playoff opener at Westman Communications Group Place. Be in your seats by 6:50pm tomorrow as the presentation will take place right before opening face-off.
The Wheat Kings, who will be hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings in game one of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series on Thursday, compiled an impressive 53-11-4-4 record for 114 points this season, finishing first overall for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
It's the fifth time in franchise history that the Wheat Kings have won the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy. In addition to '96, the Wheat Kings captured the regular season title in 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79.
Brandon went on to win the League Championship Title in both '79 and '96.
During the 2014-15 regular season, the Wheat Kings battled with the Kelowna Rockets for the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy down to the final game, but came out on top after defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors last Saturday. The Wheat Kings enjoyed a dominant season and posted a league-leading 340 goals. Brandon was consistent as they posted 27 of their wins at home and the remaining 26 on the road.
WHL Commissioner Ron Robison will be in Brandon Thursday night to make the presentation to Wheat Kings' captain Peter Quenneville.
Brandon will host the first two games of the best of seven series - Thursday at 7pm and Friday at 7:30pm. The series will then shift to Edmonton for games three, four and five. The series is a 2-3-2 format due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair occupying the Keystone Centre next week.
Along with Bill Hunter, Munro was one of the original founders of the Western Hockey League. He also served as general manager of the Estevan Bruins and both GM and head coach of the Calgary Centennials.
Tickets to both of this week's playoff games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online here or by calling 726-3555.
