Scorpions Win Nailbiter in Ninth

June 28, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

The Yuma Scorpions continued their success in the ninth inning, by handing Orange County their 7th loss, 5 via the Scorpions in Yuma tonight. The Scorpions came back in the ninth inning off closer Dane de la Rosa for the win.

The game was well played all around by the Scorpions and Flyers, staying within two runs of each other all night, final score: Yuma 4 Flyers 3.

Both teams scored one run in the first inning to get things started early. The Scorpions started their scoring with a solo HR by Henry Calderon. The Flyers were able to get a run home because of a two base error before Mark Okano scored two batters later.

The Flyers scored two more in the top of the third inning to give either team the biggest lead of the game. The big hit of the inning was a Patrick Breen homerun scoring both him and Jermy Acey. This would be all the offense that the Flyers could muster off the Scorpions the rest of the way, getting great pitching by Evan White, Neil Hayes, James Garcia, and winning pitcher Jean Carlos Guillen.

The Scorpions weren't able to get anything off the Flyers offense until late in the game, starting to come back in the seventh inning, six innings after their first run. The Scorpions scored one run in the inning on a Jeremy Cleveland sacrifice fly to score AJ Valentine.

In the ninth inning, the Scorpions scored Yosvany Almario and Pete Farina to get the comeback win. Jose Rodriguez got a lead off single before Almario came in to pinch run. And run he did, stealing both second and third base before being brought home by Pete Farina on a RBI single. Ryan Barba moved Farina over to third with a single of his own before the decisive final play. The Scorpions ultimately used strategy to win the game. Mike Marshall sent both runners on a suicide squeeze play, perfectly played by Rich Janeway. Janeway would get the winning RBI and a huge cheer from the crowd as Farina slid into home.

Dane de la Rosa would get the loss for the Flyers, although it was a classic pitching duel all the way. Jeremy Zick would go 6.1 innings, stiking out 2 and allowing only 2 runs. Evan White would go 6.0 innings, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, and fanning 7.

These two teams play two more games at Desert Sun Stadium before parting ways. The fans and members of the press box certainly hope for two more games like this one. We hope to see you tomorrow night on cup night to cheer on your Scorpions and see another great duel.
