Yuma Scorpions News Release
YUMA, Ariz. - Yuma Scorpions first baseman A.J. Valentine?s thee-run home run in the bottom of the third inning in Game 2 of a day-night double-header between Yuma and the Reno Silver Sox, lifted the home team to a 6-3 win in the night cap.
However, Valentine?s home run was questioned by Silver Sox manager Les Lancaster, as the skipper asked the game umpires to look at Valentine?s composite bat.
The home run stood and Reno played the remainder of the game in protest.
"We talked about it and (pitching coach Shannon) Hunt calmed me down," Valentine told the Yuma Sun. "The last thing they can do is throw the bat out. They can't take the home run back. We were talking about what would happen if they called me out and I was raring to go for it."
The blast to right field put the Scorpions ahead 5-0 after scoring twice in the first inning on hits by Henry Calderon and Maikel Jova. Reno cut into the lead in the fourth and fifth innings, trimming the deficit to 5-3, but Yuma held on for the win (15-6). Starting pitcher Erik Maydew earned his fourth win of the season, completing five innings, allowing eight hits, three runs while striking out five.
Neil Hayes got his ninth save of the season pitching the final two innings.
Mike Done went 2 for 3, knocking in two in Game 2.
The Silver Sox won the first game of the day, led by Ryan Kowalski who knocked in two runs and Victor Hall who hit a solo home run.
Reno?s Dusty Bergman (5-3) got the win, going 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one.
Charles Merricks got the loss for the Scorpions (5-2), giving up four runs on seven hits and three strikeouts.
The two teams finish up their four-game series tonight at 7:15 p.m. at Desert Sun Stadium.
