St. George Roadrunners Sweep Weekly Honors

(Dublin, CA. August 7, 2007) The Golden Baseball League announced 1B/DH Brett Flowers of the St. George Roadrunners and teammate RHP Mark Woodyard have been named Player and Pitcher of Week 8. Sponsored by Spalding Baseball, these weekly awards recognize the most outstanding position player and pitcher in the league each week.
Brett Flowers, 23, was selected as the player of the week for his offensive prowess. He led the GBL with 17 hits during the week and in RBIs with 12 as he hit for an average of .548. He also added a home run and scored seven runs and had a number of late inning hits to secure victories for the Roadrunners. After playing collegiately at Sacramento State, this is his second year of professional baseball after splitting time between the Fullerton Flyers of the Golden League and the El Paso Diablos of the American Association last year. He was one of the original 12 Roadrunners signed at the team's inaugural tryout in October of last year.
Mark Woodyard, 28, the right-handed starting pitcher for the St. George Roadrunners, has been selected as Pitcher of the Week. Woodyard posted a record of 2-0 during the week with an E.R.A of 2.65. He pitched one complete came and went 8 innings in the other while striking out a league-high 15 batters and walking only 1. After playing collegiately at Bethune-Cookman he was a fourth round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2000. He quickly rose through their farm system and made the big league team in 2005 where he appeared in 3 games with a 1.50 E.R.A. This is his first year in the Golden League after being released from AAA with Detroit last season. About the Golden Baseball League
The Golden Baseball League, Presented by Safeway Inc./VONS, is a professional baseball league operating in the western U.S. Golden Baseball League teams include the Chico Outlaws in Chico; CA, the Orange County Flyers in Fullerton; CA, the Long Beach Armada in Long Beach; CA, the St. George Roadrunners in St. George, UT; the Yuma Scorpions in Yuma, AZ; and the Reno Silver Sox in Reno, NV. The season runs from early June to the end of August. Over 50 GBL players have had their contract purchased by Major League organizations in the last two years.
