SCORPIONS RECAP

SCORPIONS 5, EL PASO 2 – The Scorpions stormed out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period, then held off a Buzzards rally for a 5-2 victory. Tyler Baines scored twice while Jasmin Roy recorded his first points in a Scorpions uniform with a goal and two assists. Linemate Ben Gorewich posted three assists. Peter Ambroziak and Chris Richards had the other goals. Luciano Caravaggio stopped 26 shots in goal for the Scorpions.

SCORPIONS 4, AMARILLO 2 – Fred Mattersdorfer and Vladimir Hartinger scored in the second period to break a 2-2 deadlock as the Scorpions claimed a 4-2 win over Amarillo, beating the Gorillas for the second time in six days. Tyler Baines and Neal Rech tallied in the first 3:25 of the game to chase starting Amarillo goalie Shawn Degagne, but the Gorillas tied it before the period was half over.

SCORPIONS 4, ODESSA 1 – Jasmin Roy's goal 42 seconds into the third period provided some cushion as the Scorpions went on to a 4-1 victory over the Jackalopes in the first of back-to-back games at Tingley Coliseum last Friday to tie a season high with their fifth consecutive win. Ben Gorewich scored late in the first period for a 1-0 lead while Tyler Baines scored a highlight-reel goal in the second in addition to his two assists. Peter Ambroziak added a power play goal midway through the third for the final margin.

ODESSA 4, SCORPIONS 2 – The Jackalopes gained a measure of revenge with a 4-2 win on Saturday to end the Scorpions five-game winning streak. Greg Gatto scored two power play goals to lead Odessa. Ben Gorewich and Chris Richards each scored with the man advantage for the Scorpions. Luciano Caravaggio stopped 29 shots in goal.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS

EL PASO – The Scorpions and El Paso face each other three times in a week beginning Wednesday at Tingley Coliseum. The Buzzards have been a tough team to figure out lately, with just two wins in their last ten games but a huge 5-3 win over Amarillo on Saturday. Jeff Scharf leads the Buzzards with 59 points (22g-37a) and is followed by Derrell Upton (20g-33a-53pts). Goalie Blaine Russell got the win Saturday and is 8-8-4 with a 3.92 GAA while Jamie Ronayne is 3-9-0 with a 4.33 GAA since joining the team in early January. Jeremy Vokes has stepped up with six points in the last five games.

ODESSA – The Jackalopes got a much-needed win on Saturday to jump back ahead of the Scorpions in the season series entering Friday's tenth meeting, the last one of the season. The win was the first for interim coach Dave Cressman, who is filling in for sidelined boss Don McKee. Mike Rutter had a goal and assist on Saturday and leads the Jacks in scoring with 59 points (17g-42a), while defenseman Scott Hillman (15g-38a-53pts) has moved up to third among CHL blueliners. Goalie Mike Gorman (25-17-6, 2.75 GAA) ended the Jackalopes' four-game skid with Saturday's win.

SAN ANGELO – The teams meet for the fifth and final time this season, and the first matchup since a 4-1 Saints win at Tingley on Jan. 4. The Saints didn't do the Scorpions any favors in the playoff chase with yesterday's 7-0 loss at Corpus Christi, but they have a chance for redemption by hosting the Rayz tomorrow. Chris Peach (22g-40a-62pts) is in the top 20 in the CHL in scoring but is –42 on the season. He is followed on the Saints by Troy Mann (19g-35a-54pts). Goalie Scott Reid is 11-21-3 with a 3.97 GAA while New York Rangers prospect Bryce Wandler is 1-3-1 with a 4.32 GAA.

CARAVAGGIO SETS WIN MARK – Luciano Caravaggio has edged past former Scorpions goalie and coach Tony Martino for the team's all-time win mark. Tuesday's win at El Paso put him over the top while two more wins later in the week make it 57 victories in a Scorpions uniform. He was named Player of the Week for all of minor league hockey last week by allowing one goal on 71 shots in the Scorpions' wins over Amarillo and Wichita on Feb. 21 and 22.

McPHERSON ASSIGNED – Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Andrew McPherson was assigned to the team by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (Penn.) of American Hockey League on Friday. The 23 year-old Dauphin, Manitoba native made his debut that night. In 23 games this season with Wheeling and Charlotte of the East Coast Hockey League, McPherson recorded one goal, one assist and 21 penalty minutes.

STINGERS – Tyler Baines recorded 12 goals, 20 points and was a +10 in 13 February games... Chris Richards tied a team high this season by recording a point for the seventh straight game on Saturday... Peter Ambroziak is second in the CHL with eight game-winning goals... Rookie Jasmin Roy had a big week with seven points (2g-5a) in the Scorpions' three wins... Baines has eight points (5g-3a) in his last five games... Caravaggio is 6-2-0 with a 1.63 GAA in his last eight starts.

NOTES: The Rayz are currently one point ahead of the Scorpions and two in front of Lubbock, although both of the latter teams have a game in hand. All three teams play four games this week starting with Corpus Christi at San Angelo and Lubbock at Amarillo tomorrow night. The Scorpions play five games in seven nights starting Wednesday at home against El Paso as they will play the Buzzards three times in a week. Any chances the Scorpions had of catching Odessa for the Southwest Division title were essentially ended with the Jackalopes' 4-2 win on Saturday. New Mexico still has two games in hand on the Jackalopes, but they now trail by 11 points with only Friday's game left between the two. Four of their next five games come against teams with sub-.500 records.
