Parsons, Barnes Earn CHL Awards
March 3, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League has today named Memphis right winger Don Parsons and Austin netminder Matt Barnes as the recipients of the CHL's Player and Goaltender of the Week awards for Week 20 of the CHL season. Parsons is the first RiverKing to receive weekly recognition from the CHL this season, although he was also selected as the CHL Player of the Month for December, 2002, while Barnes earns his fourth Goaltender of the Week award, while also taking home Goaltender of the Month honors for November, 2002.
Parsons, last season's Most Valuable Player in both the regular season and playoffs, led the RiverKings to five points in four contests the last week, scoring in each game and accumulating nine total points. His top performance of the week came in a 6-5 shootout loss at Wichita February 25th, where he scored twice and added a pair of assists. Three nights later, Parsons scored his 50th goal of the season, reaching that plateau for his third consecutive year. The Boston, Massachusetts native is again a strong candidate for CHL Most Valuable Player honors this season, leading the circuit in both goals (51) and points (94).
In Austin, Barnes has been consistently outstanding all season long for the Ice Bats, and this week won both his starts against Oklahoma City and Corpus Christi. Facing a barrage of 42 Blazer shots February 27th in Oklahoma City, Barnes allowed just two goals in Austin's 3-2 shootout victory. Two nights later, Barnes made 25 saves in a 4-1 home win over Corpus Christi, and almost established a new CHL record with his 9th shutout of the year before a late goal broke his shutout bid. The Brantford, Ontario native leads all CHL goaltenders with 31 wins, a 1.847 goals against average, and a .939 save percentage. Austin, along with division rival Laredo, are the only two clubs to clinch playoff berths at this point in the season.
