Scorpions So Close Yet So Far

CHICO, Calif. -- Steve Boggs' three-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning, gave the Yuma Scorpions a heartbreaking 3-2 loss against the Chico Outlaws on Wednesday night.

Boggs' well-hit ball to right center was out of the reach of Yuma Scorpions centerfielder Mike Goss, enabling Jason Van Meetren, David Pierson and Eric Pringle to score standing up, giving the Outlaws their seventh straight win (13-6).

Yuma starting pitcher Evan White pitched great through eight innings, getting 18 groundball outs on only 98 pitches, but he was just an out away from getting his career win.

Scorpions closer Amad Stephens was given the defeat after allowing three runs in the ninth.

Chico starting pitcher Phil Springman was just as impressive as he recorded 19 groundball outs, throwing four shutout innings to keep the score 2-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning.

Yuma (12-9) got on the board first, for the first time in the series, as Hector Bernal scored on an RBI groundout by Goss in the third inning.

Yosvany Almario added to the lead in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left field. Almario was for 7-for-10 hitting in the series.

The Scorpions stranded four runners, including two in the top of the eighth inning, as Maikel Jova grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Yuma will turn to starting pitcher Charles Merricks (3-0, 5.04 ERA) in the first game of a three-game set in Reno. The Scorpions and Silver Sox start Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
