Chico Outlaws News Release
The Outlaws spoiled Yuma pitcher Evan White's homecoming on a Steve Boggs 3-run double in the bottom of the 9th. White, who graduated from nearby Corning Union High School, pitched 8 scoreless innings before closer Amad Stephens came in for the 9th, with a 2-0 lead, but couldn't close it out for the Scorpions, as Chico came back to win 3-2.
Jason Van Meetren led off the 9th with a double to center and Ricky Bambino was hit by a pitch one batter later. With Van Meetren on third, pinch runner David Pierson swiped second. Eric Pringle walked and with bases loaded and two outs, Steve Boggs smashed the ball to the gap in right-center field scoring all three base runners easily.
Outlaws players mobbed Boggs along the first base line after Pringle crossed the plate, sending the 1,578 fans in attendance home happy - though there was a large contingent of fans cheering Evan White.
White made things interesting, allowing just seven runners in 8 innings while striking out just one. Outlaws hitters hit into 18 ground-outs in the game and looked off balance all night, but Chico starter Phil Springman wasn't to be outdone as he pitched 8 innings of 3-hit ball as well, but one of those hits was a solo home run by Yosvany Almario who continued his hot streak, accounting for more than half of the Scorpions hits in the series (7-for-10).
Springman didn't strikeout a batter, but induced 17 ground-outs and the Outlaws turned two double plays behind him. Jesse Oster came in to earn his first win of the season, striking out the side in a perfect 9th inning.
The win moved the Outlaws to 13-6 while the Scorpions fell to 12-9 while in the midst of a 7-game losing streak. The Outlaws' 7-game win streak matches the team record; the team won 7 games twice in 2006.
Steve Boggs extended his hitting streak to eight games, but Daniel Nava's 11-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-4.
The Outlaws look to set the club record for consecutive wins against first-place Orange County at Nettleton Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the Outlaws will send out Jake McKinley (2-1, 4.11 ERA) and the Flyers will counter with Alex Robbie (2-0, 2.37 ERA).
