Scorpions Sign Four New Players
April 26, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release
It seems General Manager Jose Melendez has been exchanging sleep for quality players over the past two days as the Yuma Scorpions have added four new players. RHP Jon Huizinga, RHP Danny Rondon, RHP Eric Stolp, and INF Carlos Leon have all agreed to terms. RHP Jon Huizinga was added on April 25th. While spending time in the Milwaukee Brewers system, he most recently was apart of the Rockford Riverhawks in the Northern League. Last season he threw in 43-games posting a 3.64 ERA.
The Minnesota Twins have cut ties with Danny Rondon at the moment and the Scorpions attained another blazing righty. As relief effort goes, Danny can hold his own on the mound. In 2009, Danny pitched in 21 games posting 7.1 strikeouts per 9-innings. He will be a welcomed arm to an ever improving bullpen.
Yet another player spending time in the minors has been added to the roster. RHP Eric Stolp has noticed the potential in Yuma this season as well. Eric has thrown over 180-innings in the past two seasons while posting a hair over 4-ERA. The Scorpions are excited about the opportunity of acquiring Stolp after he was with the San Jose Giants, high-A club of the San Francisco Giants. Stolp brings in the potential to be a quality-start type of player.
The lone fielder signed so far this week is Carlos Leon. He sniffed the potential of the Yuma Scorpions this season and pounced at the opportunity to be apart of the team. He spent his first 7-seasons within the Boston Red Sox organization making his way to AA before finding himself in the Philadelphia Phillies farm systems. Inside the system, Carlos notched 10-seasons in AA and 4-seasons in AAA. He brings even more talent and experience to this growing team.
As the talent of the team rises, so goes the expectations for the Scorpions season. Jose Melendez is "excited about the changes being made so far this season. We are trying to instill a sense of pride and show the league, and most importantly our own fans, we are committed to this team and to the City of Yuma." Team Manager Jose Canseco has been working hard to show his fans and teammates he is serious about the season, "My brother, (Ozzie), and I have been working every day during the week. Working with Jose [Melendez] has been a great decision as we continue to bring in the quality-character players we need, to not only win, but to shed a new light on the situation in Yuma. I'm very optimistic about the season."
