Scorpions open 2005 with overtime win

SCORPIONS RECAP –

SCORPIONS 5, LUBBOCK 2 – Trevor Hammer scored his first two goals of the season and Alexandre Piche posted a goal and two assists to lead the Scorpions to a 5-2 win over the Cotton Kings on Tuesday at Tingley Coliseum. Randy Murphy and Mike Oliveira also scored for the Scorpions. Peter Ambroziak and Randy Murphy each added two assists. Miguel Beaudry made 26 saves for the victory.

COLORADO 5, SCORPIONS 1 – The Eagles claimed their fourth straight win over the Scorpions, closing out 2004 with a 5-1 victory on Friday. Colorado scored twice in the second period to take a 2-0 before Mike Oliveira got the Scorpions on the board with a power play goal 42 seconds into the third period. However, Colorado scored three unanswered goals, including two with a 5-on-3 power play, to put the game away. Miguel Beaudry tied a season-high with 40 saves.

SCORPIONS 4, AMARILLO 3 (OT) – Vladimir Hartinger scored at 2:02 of overtime and added an assist to get the Scorpions off to a good start in 2005 with a 4-3 win at Amarillo on Saturday. The Gorillas took a 2-0 lead on a pair of power play goals in the first period, before goals from Mike Possin in the second and Shawn Legault early in the third tied the game. Dan Donnette put the hosts back ahead with a shorthanded tally, only to see Mike Oliveira force overtime just 1:43 later. Miguel Beaudry stopped 25 shots for the win.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS –

MEMPHIS – The teams meet three times in 11 days beginning with two games this weekend in Memphis. The Scorpions scored six unanswered goals, including four power play tallies, in a 6-3 win at Tingley Coliseum in the first meeting on Oct. 30. All-Star starter and two-time CHL Most Valuable Player Don Parsons is tied for second in the league with 22 goals and tied for seventh with 38 points. Derek Landmesser (5g-23a) leads all CHL defensemen with 28 points. Memphis allows 3.72 goals per game, 16th of 17 teams. David Lemanowicz (5-9-0, 3.12 GAA), Daniel Boisclair (2-4-1, 3.67 GAA) and J-F Racine (4-4-0, 3.86 GAA) make up the RiverKings' three-headed goaltending tandem, although Racine is currently on recall to St. John's of the AHL. The RiverKings, who are 0-5-1 in their last six games, play at Fort Worth on Tuesday before hosting Bossier-Shreveport on Thursday.

ALL-STARS NAMED – Scorpions defenseman Daniel Tetrault and goalie Miguel Beaudry were named last week as reserves to the Northern Conference squad which will participate in the 2005 CHL All-Star Game at Laredo, Tex. on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Tetrault will be making his fourth trip to the All-Star Game in five years and his first as a member of the Scorpions, while second-year pro Beaudry will make his initial appearance at the midseason classic.

STINGERS – Saturday's game was the first time in their nine-year history that the Scorpions have been in action on New Year's Day... Miguel Beaudry made his 13th straight start on Saturday, tying the team record set by Scott Myers during the 2001-02 season... With two assists on Saturday at Amarillo, Randy Murphy now has a point in 11 of the last 12 games... He is tied for seventh in the CHL with 38 points (16g-22a)... After this weekend's games in Memphis, the Scorpions will play ten of the following 12 contests at Tingley Coliseum.

SCORPIONS TICKETS AND EVENTS –

SCORPIONS BACK-TO-BACK VS. WICHITA – The Scorpions return to Tingley Coliseum for back-to-back games on Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15, both at 7:05 p.m. Friday's game is Tomenstock Koozy Night to the first 1,500 fans. After Friday's game, stick around for a post-game concert from the HellDrivers. Saturday's game is NASCAR Night. Anybody wearing NASCAR apparel will get $3 off a grandstand ticket at the door.

SPECIAL JAN. 17 MATINEE – The Scorpions host Memphis on Monday, Jan. 17 for a special 2:05 p.m. matinee against the Memphis RiverKings on Martin Luther King Day. Comcast Family 4-Packs return, as families can purchase four grandstand tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for just $44. Children 15 and under can get $6 tickets to the game.
