San Antonio Scorpions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The San Antonio Scorpions continued their strong push to close out the 2015 Spring Season by earning a point in a 0-0 draw with the Ottawa Fury in front of 6,709 fans at Toyota Field.

Scorpions rookie Matt Cardone was inserted at starting goalkeeper just before kickoff due to a Daryl Sattler injury in warmups. The San Antonio native and former two-time All-American from Trinity University made his professional debut in the match. The first real threat on his goal came in the 13' when Ottawa had a 1-on-1 with Julius James pushing into the 18-yard box. However, James snuffed out the attack, creating some energy early on in the game.

Billy Forbes found his way into the Fury's box a few times over the course of the next few minutes, but couldn't get off a shot nor send in a cross. The Scorpions best opportunity in the first half came in the 26' when Marvin Chavez sent in a booming free kick from about 25 yards out. Ottawa goalie Romuald Peiser pounced to make a diving save and keep the score level at nil-nil.

The beginning of the second half saw multiple chances develop for the Alamo City boys, but none equated to goals. Rafael Castillo sent in a lining cross from the right wing in the 46', but was turned away by Peiser. Two subsequent corners by Marvin Chávez were sent into dangerous spots in the area, but Peiser snuffed them out as well.

Ottawa found the bulk of their opportunities between the 65th-67th minutes. Fury attacking midfielder Nicki Paterson had two corners that were headed away by César Elizondo and Adrian Cann. Cann's header led to a volley shot by Fury center back Colin Falvey from inside the 18-yard box, but the ball just sailed over the top of the crossbar.

After stifling defense from both sides through the remainder of the second half, the Scorpions last gasps for a goal came in stoppage time, when Omar Cummings rifled a shot from 20 yards just over the top-right corner of the crossbar. A minute later, a give-and-go sequence at midfield from Rafael Castillo and Bright Dike led to a ground shot from Castillo, but it was easily collected by Peiser.

The Scorpions end the Spring Season at 3-3-4 and just two points out of playoff positioning having earned at least a point in 4 of their last 5 matches. Fury goalkeeper Romaul Peiser extends his modern-day NASL consecutive shutout minutes record to 526 minutes. Ottawa also earned their fifth consecutive shutout while finishing the season scoring just once over the course of their final six games. The Fury end their Spring campaign 9th in the table with a 2-5-3 record.

The Scorpions play a friendly against Costa Rican club Club Sport Cartaginés on June 27th at Toyota Field before resuming NASL action July 5th against FC Edmonton in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
