Ottawa Fury FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Ottawa Fury FC closed out the NASL Spring Season on a 5-game unbeaten streak thanks to a 0-0 draw in San Antonio Saturday night. After setting an NASL modern-era record for longest shutout streak last week, goalkeeper Romauld Peiser and company further cemented themselves in the NASL record books with a fifth straight shutout that has seen them hold the opposition of the score sheet for the last 526 minutes ... and counting.
"This group has been workng extremely hard to win games," said Marc Dos Santos following Saturday's Spring Season finale. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get all three points, but we are doing things that we have to be proud of."
Dos Santos has said all season the value in earning points each week in a very competitive NASL. "Playing the reigning Champions in there home is not easy and we did well to get a positive result."
All three meetings in 2014 were very tight and Saturday night's meeting, the first of 2015, proved no different. Both sides refused to surrender space in the midfield which resulted in few quality chances for either side in the opening half. Mauro Eustaquio made his first start of the season playing in place of Julian De Guzman who is away on International duty with the Canadian Men's National Team. Ottawa's back line of Trafford, Falvey, Alves and Richter once again proved impenetrable as San Antonio did not earn a shot inside the 18-yard box.
While the midfield was a battle ground all night, Sinisa Ubiparipovic was often at the heart of the Ottawa attack and did well to supply Carl Haworth, Brandon Poltronieri and Paulo Junior who were tasked with breaking down a San Antonio defence that had conceded just six goals in their last five games.
The second half saw much of the same as San Antonio struggle to break down Ottawa's defensive play, while Fury FC hit on the counter attack, but could not produce a threat inside the 18-yard box. Rafael Castillo did his best to lift the Scorpions to victory, but was unable to beat Romuald Peiser who collected his fifth straight shutout and sixth of the Spring Season. Peiser now leads the NASL in shutouts and is tied with Cosmos keeper Jimmy Maurer with the best goals against 0.80.
Phil Davies made his 2015 debut after missing almost the entire Spring Season due to a severely broken arm during Spring Season. Tom Heinemann also return from injury. Both players came off the bench late in the second half, but for the third straight match Fury FC were held scoreless.
Ottawa concludes the NASL Spring Season with a record of 2-5-3 (W-D-L) good for 11 points and ninth position, just three points out of third spot. Off the 55 games in the NASL Spring Season, 22 ended in a draw, 21 have been decided by one goal and 12 have been decided by two or more goals.
